DEVO: Digital EVOlution
Digital EVOlution researches the ways how people can interfere with evolutionary programs. Evolutionary programs in this sense are not the traditional optimization applications but are tending towards 'lively' creatures (also called phenotypes). The creatures natural habitat is the computer memory, but it will visualy represent itselve as patterns in three dimensions. The outside world 'enters' the digital realm by means of continuous digitised data streams. Streams can be visual, like a continuous video stream,or non-visual, like variance in electro-magnetic fields caused by approaching humans. A Creature will reproduce, mutate and die. Human interference effects all states of evolution. Therefore people can be seen as a higher power controling the populations behavior and growth. also check DEVO's senses |

Creatures "Creatures", representations of their genotypes, floating around in their realm. People enter the territory by approaching and gently seek for bodily positions that seem to please the creatures. By seeking positions people reduce the stochastic parameter and steer population and individual growth. As with natural evolution, changes and mutations will not appear immediatly. However changes in behavior and appearance will quickly become noticeable. |

set up The world is projected inside a 1 by 1 meter copper cube on a pane of glass. A single camera records the people in front. This setup creates a fine transparent aquarium like setting. In this way people are virtually placed inside the setting and interaction with the creatures appears very close and intimate. materials: - Copper cube - Glass - Projection - Creature - Camera - Stand - Beamer & Computer |
